Spring break time is here! And that means many of you will be traveling to wild & wonderful places. One of the most popular destinations is the beach.

 

It doesn't get much better than a warm breeze, salt water, and sand! Unfortunately, what comes along with the beautiful weather is harmful rays from the sun. Make sure to protect your skin! Here's the basics:

SUNSCREEN

One of the most important things you need to apply DAILY is sunscreen. This is a standard rule even when you aren't vacationing. What does sunscreen do you ask? Well Skincancer.org breaks it down for us.

"Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer.

UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB."

So make sure to apply sunscreen before you head out, and don't forget to reapply through out the day! Especially if you are playing in the pool or sea. Your skin will thank you for it as you age.

SHADE

Make sure you have some shade near by. You'll need a break from the sun, even if you are covered head to toe in sunscreen. The sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m, so try to stay shaded during those times.

COVER UP

Cover your head with a big brimmed hat to protect your scalp, face, and shoulders from harmful rays. A light weight cover up can also help protect your body from getting excessive sun. This advice is great for anyone that loves gardening or working outside, and not just beach goers. Plus you'll look FABULOUS!

HYDRATE

 

It's important to stay hydrated when you're out in the heat. Not only does your body need the hydration to function and cool down, but your skin needs it to stay healthy. So make sure to drink lots of water in-between margaritas and other fancy drinks with little umbrellas. :)
